The email in my Inbox simply said, “I’d like to arrange a meeting with you about rent to own. I noticed that the signature at the bottom was that of a realtor.
So, I responded that I’d be happy to meet with her, but asked whether her interest lay as a client, an investor, or a realtor.
Both 1 and 3, she responded.
I’m not sure whether I was even fully seated yet in the Starbucks where we met, when her first words to me were, “I’m here only because of CAROP.”
She explained that as a long-term realtor, she had always advised against rent to own because of its sketchy reputation. However, she’d discovered CAROP and was willing to reconsider her stance.
As we concluded the conversation, perhaps 45 minutes later, she assured me that she was convinced. She would advise all her agents in her Realty offices in three different cities to promote the rent-to-own option with members of CAROP.
Then, she added that as an entrepreneur—self-employed–she’d invested all resources into expanding her business, so she and her husband, themselves, were unable to get a mortgage. She might consider the option for herself, as well.
